| An understanding of the Human Genome Project and its applications
to medicine and society in the 21st century is critical for an informed
public. Genomics will strongly influence the biological and medical sciences
and will have significant applications in agriculture, anthropology, chemistry,
and the social sciences. Findings of genetic research will challenge our
current medical, ethical, and legislative frameworks. We believe it is the
Human Genome Sequencing Center's privilege and responsibility to take a
leadership role in educating the public about these issues. |

The Museum of Health and Medical Science
 |
Every summer, the HGSC enjoys the opportunity to participate
in "Mini-Medical School" camps that are offered by the Museum of Health
and Medical Science. Campers are invited to spend an afternoon at
the HGSC, where our staff members and scientists present educational
materials and give tours of the Center. |

The Houston Museum of Natural Science
The Human Genome Sequencing Center and the Houston Museum of Natural Science are in the process of creating a unique, dynamic, multi-media exhibition called, "The Living Genome: Reading the Book of Life". This program will provide a broad-based educational opportunity for the Houston community that focuses on genomics and is centered at HMNS. The exhibit will open in April 2003, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Watson and Crick's historic publication of the double helix structure of DNA, and completion of the Human Genome Project.
